What is Myofascial Release Therapy?

A gentle, sustained, hands-on technique that targets fascial restrictions (or “adhesions”) in the tissue. This technique uses no lubrication (i.e. massage lotion, cream, or oil) to allow for the therapist to fully connect and engage with the client’s fascial tissue.

The fascial system is a whole-body system that is interacts with and is infused with all of the body’s other systems (respiratory, cardiac, digestive, neurological, etc). Trauma, injury, surgery, and overuse and compensation issues in the human body can contribute to fascial adhesions. As the adhesions sit in the body, they place a pressure on it, creating a “straightjacket” feeling. Overtime, this

No More “No Pain, No Gain”

Many people assume in massage & bodywork that the “No pain, No gain” approach (where the firmer the pressure, the more substantial the release and the relief) is the philosophy to achieving the most lasting positive results. In actuality, that concept cannot be further from the truth. When applying gentle pressure to adhered tissue and holding it (for a minimum or five minutes), over time the restrictions begin to “unwind” and soften, releasing the pressure that has been held in the fascia on a deeper level, creating a more long-lasting result.

Conditions that MFR can help support:

  • Sciatica
  • TMJ Dysfunction
  • Repetitive Strain injuries
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Headaches and Migraines

What Can I Expect During a Session?

During the initial session, we will take time to discuss your symptoms, goals, as well as any relevant medical history that may be creating fascial restrictions in your body.

Once this has taken place, the therapist will step out and allow you will time to prepare and lie on the table. It is recommended that clients wear a pair of shorts and a sports bra (for women) as the therapist will need access to your skin/tissue, but you may wear whatever feel comfortable for you.

The therapist will then proceed to begin the treatment, utilizing sustained holds with gentle pressure (using no massage lotions, oils, or cream) in order to engage with the fascia. The therapist will invite you to be very present of what you are feeling in your body as the holds are sustained.

Most clients report feeling warmth/cold or tingling sensations in their tissue as the fascia begins to unwind and release. Many clients describe their MFR sessions as deeply calming and subtly powerful.
